PhD. in Cultural Studies 2010
CSCS invites applications for the academic year beginning August 2010. For eligibility criteria and other details, see below. The CSCS Ph.D. is affiliated to Manipal University and Kuvempu University.
The PhD in Cultural Studies
involves one year of coursework followed by supervised reading, writing and research
for approximately 4 more years. The courses will be reading/writing intensive.
Students will learn how to interpret complex texts, to understand intellectual
debates that have formed the horizon of interdisciplinary cultural studies, formulate
and discuss ideas and questions, and to write research papers. Our faculty includes
scholars known for their analyses of contemporary culture in its inter-connections
with political and economic processes. Distinguished visiting faculty from India
and abroad will also be involved in PhD instruction at the Centre.
The PhD programme draws on and contributes to the Research
Programmes that CSCS has incubated in recent years. The thematic concerns of
the programmes include interdisciplinary legal studies, higher education, science
and society studies, social justice, language and region, culture industry,
cultural policy and rights, gender and culture, urban cultures, caste and democracy,
mental health, colonial histories. While students may bring in research topics
unconnected to programmatic concerns, students will be strongly encouraged to
integrate their research with programme priorities. First-year students will
be required to work for short periods as interns in programmes of their choice,
and to develop their research questions through this internship.
Limited PhD fellowships of Rs.10,000 per month will be offered
on merit-cum-means basis. After the first year, students are eligible to apply
for part-time and full-time programme-related jobs at CSCS.
CSCS also offers a one-year Diploma in Cultural Studies alongside
the PhD programme. The Diploma is open to candidates from any discipline, preferably
with a post-graduate degree.
